Final Blog Post
I can’t believe that this will be my last blog post for this class! This semester has honestly felt pretty long and heavy with course work, so I feel very relieved that it is now coming to an end. This semester has been packed with many readings, assignments, projects, reports, and papers. I definitely feel like I have learned so much this past semester and have gained a lot more essential knowledge that I will definitely be using going forward in the future throughout school. This class was definitely a writing intensive course, and I feel like I have done the most writing in this class than all of my other courses this semester. I also feel like my writing skills have greatly improved by taking this course, due to the amount of assignments that we had and how all of the assignments were writing assignments or incorporated writing. Not only did this class improve my writing skills, I think that it also improved my social skills and networking skills due to the structure and requirements of our unit assignments. Having to go out into the community and talk with qualified people is new for me in school assignments. I previously had been taking all science courses as I was previously a premed student, so I didn’t have to do too much talking yet, moreso just keeping my nose in a textbook. Being instructed to speak to members of the community and ask questions as well as interview community members to formulate a story definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I think that I grew a lot as a person through this, and also bettered my communication skills. This class also made me get more comfortable with interviewing. I am much more used to being interviewed rather than being the interviewer, so it was really interesting to experience having that role reversed and conducting and directing an interview. I also made some great connections by being a part of this class, and got to know professors, classmates, and people in the community better by partaking in our assignments.
In this class I really enjoyed the freedom that we had to explore our interests, and being able to take our interests and learn more about them by applying them to our assignments. It was cool to see what other classmates were interested in as well. I believe that we produce our highest quality work when we genuinely care and are truly interested in the topic that we are discussing. Because of this, I think that I was able to learn a lot from my classmates. My peers are incredibly smart and very fun to learn from, and I also enjoyed being able to get feedback from them on my projects and work. Altogether, I am very tired but grateful to have been able to get through this semester. I am very proud of myself for making it this far, and I am proud of my classmates and everyone persevering through college during this crazy time in life. Good luck to everyone and happy summer break!
You should be so proud of the work you produced this semester! This isn't an easy class, but it will ask you to grow if you let it, and you rose to the challenge. I loved reading about your experiences with the other part of journalism: the research, networking, and interviewing piece, which is a nice counterpoint to the solitude of writing.
